The Piedmontese winery Vinchio Vaglio once again chooses the exclusive Bag-in-Box from Box Marche for its new wine line, offering convenience, safety, and optimal preservation of its fine wine, together with custom artwork representing its distinctive territory.
Vinchio Vaglio agricultural company has built an unprecedented cooperation, first and foremost with its vineyards, in the area that includes the core zone of the UNESCO-protected Langhe Roero and Monferrato, from which one of the most prized wines in Piedmont, Italy, and the world is born: Barbera.
In collaboration with Boxmarche, the Vinchio Vaglio cooperative, which unites nearly 200 families under a single philosophy and has always been a vigilant ambassador of the territory and an advocate for the environment, has chosen to reserve our best line of Bag in Box packaging for its high-quality wines. This packaging is further personalized with stunning stories and artistic graphics that the winery has chosen to gift to its consumers.
The ever-growing numbers for prestigious wines in Bag in Box demonstrate how a practical, sustainable packaging choice also rewards sales performance.
We visited them to hear about this extraordinary collaboration, another successful partnership made in Italy.
We know your long history built on human cooperation and love for nature. You produce a wine that is incredibly loved by connoisseurs. Over the years, you’ve strengthened this reputation globally. What sets you apart from other Italian wine producers?
Our story began in 1959 and it is based on cooperation and respect for the land. Today, our 192 members manage nearly 500 hectares in the heart of the UNESCO core zone of Langhe Roero and Monferrato. Our mission is to be ambassadors of our territory and the vineyards that best represent it, primarily the Barbera. Unlike most other Piedmontese cooperatives, we vinify and bottle almost all the grapes brought by our members, carrying the name Vinchio Vaglio to tables all over the world.
Barbera is a wine that doesn’t age. And Vinchio Vaglio, nestled in the enchanting lands of Monferrato, is its birthplace. But is it true that an aged wine is more valuable, or, on the contrary, does it lose the distinct characteristics of its typicity?
We were among the first, with the Vigne Vecchie project launched in 1987, to believe in Barbera by undertaking a rigorous selection process, first of the vineyards and then of the grapes, in order to produce a wine capable of competing with the most renowned and prestigious wines in the world. Through the expert use of oak aging, Barbera surprises with its longevity, while preserving its main characteristics. But since we like to define ourselves as the Nest of Barbera, in 2009, on the occasion of the company’s 50th anniversary, we introduced a version of our flagship product, the “Barbera d’Asti Superiore Vigne Vecchie,” aged only in steel and cement – the “Vigne Vecchie 50°” – which expresses the full typicity of the Barbera grape as a young, easy-drinking wine.
With 50.3 million hectolitres produced, Italy remains the world’s leading wine producer, despite an early harvest and wine production below the 20-year average. How does Vinchio Vaglio policy position itself in the context we are living in, marked by significant climate change?
In recent years, the impact of climate change has become increasingly evident, affecting our wine production. Last year, in particular, unprecedented drought and abnormal heat not only negatively impacted the quantity produced but also made the harvest much more complicated, both in timing and methods. Beyond the wine industry, we are all influenced by these changes, and everyone must do our part to respect our planet. In this regard, Vinchio Vaglio has started a journey to reduce its environmental impact through green investments, such as photovoltaic systems, land reclamation projects, and the use of alternative containers like Bag in Box. However, there is still much to be done, and our commitment is to continue improving while respecting our territory and our Earth.
The prestigious Vinchio Vaglio winery preserves and highlights its high-quality wines even in practical Bag-in-Box containers. How can you convince an increasingly discerning customer that Bag-in-Box means optimal preservation of that quality?
We were among the first in Italy—and certainly in Piedmont—to believe in this format, and from the very beginning, we aimed to convey that inside our Bag-in-Box packaging, you’ll find high-quality wine. We have produced nearly 700,000 Bag-in-Box containers, ranging from 3 to 10 litres, with 95% of them being wines with Denomination of Controlled Origin. Initially, it was difficult to convince especially the more sceptical customers that the same quality found in bottles could be preserved in this new format, obviously at a more affordable price. However, over time, testing quality, customers have become convinced of the high level and excellent preservation quality that our Bag in Box solutions offer. The numbers that keep growing are evidence of this.
Your packaging represents an extraordinary combination of convenience and preservation of the wines’ quality. What has it been like working with Box Marche?
We immediately understood that in order to convey to the end customer that our Bag-in-Box containers hold the highest quality wines, it was necessary to invest in high-level packaging that would best represent our wines and our territory. We found in Box Marche a reliable partner who shares our vision of seeking quality. Recently, they have been instrumental in the complete restyling of our entire range of Bag in Box, achieving the best possible result.
Each of the six packaging designs created by the creatives for the Bag in Box wine line represents a bucolic landscape, a place close to the heart. When put together, what story do they aim to evoke?
With this line, we’ve sought to convey not only the quality found inside the products but also our deep connection with the land. For this reason, together with NSG, the agency entrusted with the complete renewal of our corporate image, we chose to graphically reinterpret photographs of some of the places we hold dearest. Our cooperative represents nearly 200 families, and this is why we are the first ambassadors of our territory. We continue to invest in the development of tourism, organizing various events each year, even within the "I Nidi della Barbera" park, a nature trail we created around the winery. This journey is also narrated through the images on the new Bag in Box line.
